A Rock Opera, of Sorts

Issa

That no-good bastard.

That’s all that’s running through my head as I prowl this cage like a wild animal.

It doesn’t take long for me to realize where I am.

At the venue.

On stage.

It seems Declan plans on making me part of his show, though I can’t imagine how he plans on incorporating me into his normal set.

Then, I remember this is Declan fucking Hughes, and his normal set doesn’t mean shit when he has the power and means to change his set however he pleases at a moment’s notice.

Which means this could get ugly.

The venue fills up rapidly, and before too long, the sound check is complete, and the place is getting amped for the show to begin. I’ve never been to one of Declan’s live concerts, but they’re well-known for being a raucous good time.

He’s been playing with the same band for at least a decade, and they have things fine-tuned to the point I think any one of them could step in for the other without even blinking.

Well, with the exception of Declan.

The band comes out first, most of them giving me a nod, but no one speaks to me directly. I don’t bother trying to start up a conversation or, worse yet, asking someone to let me out, knowing it would be a waste of breath.

The band takes their places, making sure everything is set for go-time, and the fervor of the crowd increases with every moment they wait for Declan to appear on stage.

The atmosphere is electric, and I’m enveloped by this odd warmth that’s comforting and disconcerting at the same time.

Declan enters the stage on the opposite side, on which my cage is positioned, so the crowd sees him first.

They immediately lose their minds, screaming, shouting, stomping, and clapping, and I can’t help but smile at their extreme level of enthusiasm. Not that my fans lack enthusiasm or anything, but this is a touch above the norm range.

He steps out in front of everyone and doesn’t say a word; he just raises his hands above his head, and the decibel level goes up another couple of notches. All he has to do is stand there, looking out at the crowd, and he has them in the palm of his hand.

I don’t feel Declan’s level of stage presence is something that can be taught. Sure, you can overcompensate with tricks, lights, smoke, water, and whatever else you wanna throw into your show. But for someone who’s able to walk out on the stage and be the show, that’s a whole other level of entertainment.

I’m so enraptured watching him that, at first, I don’t realize he’s talking about me. Then, I scowl as he says, “My wife wanted to try something different today. Do you like her cage?”

Now, the roaring is intermingled with laughs and hoots, and I shake my head. It’s not like I didn’t know he’d try and pull some kind of shit to make me part of the show. Otherwise, he would’ve put the cage in his dressing room or left me caged at home.
